Following 2 highly successful Pan-round-neck workshops in January and April 2008
theSteel Pan Academy launched it’s Pan-round-Neck band in September 2009, with the help and support of Nostalgia steel band from London, a generous Awards for All Lottery Grant and great arrangements and Direction from Phase One’s Stephon Phillip and the band now celebrates six successful years and lots of great gigs, including Notting hill carnival and two tours to Italy and Belgium.
The Steel Pan Academy Pan-Round-Neck band rehearses one Sunday a month, usually the third Sunday. Rehearsals last 3 hours and are based at Kenilworth Wardens Cricket Club, Glasshouse Lane, Kenilworth. The band will continue to be directed byStephon Phillip, Director and Manager of Phase One and supported by the Steel Pan Academy staff.
Membership is open to all pannists with some experience playing pan aged 11 years to adult and aims to have the structure of a large community band.
The Academy is still working to source more pans to enable this community band to grow even bigger.
Fees are being kept to a minimum, especially for Academy group members and will be as little as £60 per year for 10 rehearsals, or £110 for non-Academy group members. These can be paid in 2 installments to ease budgets.
